‘A Walking Sketch’
My graduate collection at Central Saint Martins is an exploration in bringing the 2D world of fashion illustration into 3D reality. Sketchbooks are normally a private space. They are used as relics of investigation rather than within the final outcomes. My collection brings the privacy of my sketchbook and my drawings to the forefront: the quick gestural marks and energy of the pencil is translated through various techniques onto fabric, making the models real life illustrations. My collection bridges the gap between the fantasy of what's on the piece of paper and reality.
I have used different techniques, varying from applique, flocking and screen-printing, to embody the melange of textures created on paper while illustrating. Maintaining the energy and immediacy of my drawings, while also refining them into silhouettes that are timeless. The selected fabrics, mainly a mixture of crepes, drape softly on the body like thin sheets of paper. The shapes are considered, but there is an ease to them, as if they have been dropped effortlessly onto the figure. The silhouettes are influenced by the minimalist lines of the 60s, featuring undefined waistlines that are graceful and ageless. There is a careful simplicity in my seams to achieve an effortless and feminine silhouette.
